Just because the weather outside is cold, it doesn’t mean that winter weight loss isn’t possible. In fact, many people find that it is a lot of fun to use the excuse of having a chill in the air or snow on the ground for blasting through calories and fats.
Though you may think of winter weight loss as being something that involves only forcing yourself to eat foods that only appeal during the summertime and doing indoor exercises but heading outside can be a lot of fun, too. If you grew up in a place where it was cold in the winter, then all you likely need to do is think back to your favorite winter activities from your childhood in order to discover what you could be doing for losing weight while having a lot of fun.
Ice skating and skiing are both activities that many people absolutely adore. The struggle with them is that the majority of people don’t have the facilities for those sports close-by enough that they can do them every day. That said, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy them once or twice per week as a treat. It’s likely best not to do the same activity every single day, anyway, as it makes sure that you give your muscles enough time to rest and that you use a larger number of your muscles and not always the same ones.
If you’re looking for something you can likely do a little bit closer to home, then consider getting a pair of snowshoes. The modern forms of this equipment is very light and is much smaller than the traditional form. All you need is a field – which you can find in a park in the city – and you have everything you need to go tromping around in your snowshoes. No training necessary.
If you don’t want to buy any special equipment at all, then just bundle up and head out for a walk like you would in the summer. You’ll be shocked at how quickly you warm up and how refreshing it is to go for a good brisk walk. When the sidewalks get snowy, you won’t need to go as far to get your heart rate up and spend the same amount of time walking. The added challenge you face in each step will give you more of a workout so you don’t need as much distance to achieve the same goals.
Overall, winter weight loss sports often make it very easy to get your cardio complete for the week and allow you to have a lot of fun while you’re doing it. Mixing that with the colder weather which causes your body to have to work harder to stay warm means you’ll burn more calories than usual. The key is not to take the experience too seriously. Don’t forget to make a snowman or a couple of snow angels now and again, too!
