What is phentermine?
Phentermine is a medication for significantly overweight (obese) people, to help change their eating habits. Phentermine is used in correlation with behavior changing programs or therapy, a healthy diet, and exercise program. Generally recommended by a physician for people who are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. There are some guidelines and things to consider before taking Phentermine.
Before Taking Phentermine
You should not take phentermine if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
- History of heart disease
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart rhythm problems
- Congestive heart failure
- Stroke
- A history of pulmonary hypertension
- Uncontrolled or severely high blood pressure
- Overactive thyroid
- Glaucoma
- If you are pregnant
- If you are nursing
- If you are in an agitated state
- If you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse; or
- If you are allergic to other diet pills, amphetamines, stimulants
- If you have allergies to any cold medicines
Do not take phentermine with any other diet pills or stimulants such as fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine, for it can cause a rare fatal lung disorder called pulmonary hypertension.
Do not take phentermine if you have taken any MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days. This can cause a dangerous drug reaction.
Do not take phentermine if you are pregnant, (category X) this will cause harm to the fetus.
Do not take phentermine if you are nursing, it can transfer through breast milk to the child and cause harm.
Do not give phentermine to children, not to be used by anyone under 16.
Do not give phentermine to anyone with a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
Before taking Phentermine, tell your doctor if you have:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Kidney disease
- Thyroid disorder or
- If you are allergic to aspirin or to yellow food dye (FD&C Yellow No. 5, or tartrazine)
Phentermine is used along with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise, and behavior change program recommended by your physician to help you lose weight. Phentermine is designed for significantly overweight (obese) people, by helping suppress the appetite. It is used by people who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise alone.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once a day, 1 hour before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Your doctor may adjust your dose to take a small dose up to 3 times a day. Taking this medication late in the day may cause insomnia. Make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
If you are using phentermine dissolvable tablets, make sure to allow the tablet to fully dissolve on the tongue. Take with or without food or water. If you are using phentermine sustained release capsules make sure to take whole, do not crush or chew. Premature full doses of phentermine will increase the health risks.
This medication is usually only taken for a few weeks at a time. Phentermine can be habit forming and should not be taken by people with a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Speak with your doctor about other alternatives before taking Phentermine.
